Walking Sunday, between the hotel where I stay and the San Jose Convention Center I came across a park with a fountain in which children and adults cooled themselves. Further along, purple-flowered trees and palms lined the walk. Further still, were ever-present signs of the urban homeless.

Then I heard a bagpipe calling us to worship. It was a wonderful, auditory and visual feast. Rev. Joan Grey set the tone for the work of the General Assembly by preaching “The Impossible Commandment”, love your neighbor.
Walking today, it is cool, the fountain is off, the trees still blooming, the urban homeless still with us. Archbishop Elias Chacour, Archbishop of Galilee of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church preached “Unity within Diversity: Christianity in a Pluralistic Society”. For me, the high point of each day is the worship service, which helps me get focused.

Among the items coming from the committee to which I was assigned were the recommendation for the adoption of the first major policy statement on ecumenism since reunion and the recommendation to support an Invitation to Interfaith Dialogue: A Common Word Between Us and You, an invitation to dialogue and cooperation from 138 Muslim clerics.
